Michael De Costa - Baritone

Formidable reputation as both a vocal teacher in original 13th Century Marygate Tower in York and a world famous baritone.

Michael De Costa has performed on numerous occasions at The Royal Albert and Royal Festival Halls, has been the principle baritone with English National Opera London and with various opera companies in Russia, Bahrain, Malta to name but a few.

Michael De Costa studied singing with the legendary Arthur Hinchcliffe, and later with John Hargreaves.  He has become one of the most sought-after concert baritones in England, and is Director of his own highly successful Academy of Music in York.

Since making his professional operatic debut as Amonasro (Aida) in 1986, he has performed in a wide variety of roles, mainly specialising in the Italian Romantic repertoire and the operas of Verdi. 

His repertoire includes the title roles in Macbeth, Nabucco and Rigoletto, Luna (Il Trovatore), Germont (La Traviata), Renato (Un ballo in maschera), Iago (Otello) and Zachariah (Nabucco).  He has also performed the roles of Tonio (I Pagliacci), Valentine (Faust) and Escamillo (Carmen) as well as appearing in a variety of Gilbert & Sullivan operettas

English National Opera

Michael De Costa has worked with English National Opera in the role of Don Carlo (The Force of Destiny) and in the title role of Jonathan Miller’s acclaimed production of Rigoletto.

Odessa State Opera

In 2000, Michael was invited by the Odessa State Opera to sing in Russia under the baton of the celebrated Russian conductor, Sergei Motsoyan. Whilst in Russia, Michael also appeared in concert and on television and gave masterclasses at the Odessa State Conservatoire.

More recently, Michael was invited to perform the principal baritone role in Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, in a prestigious concert in Bahrain. While in Bahrain, Michael was delighted to be introduced to members of the Bahraini Royal Family.
